This year’s observation of World AIDS Day takes place on Tuesday, December 1. It is the annual observance dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic. The global theme for 2009’s World AIDS Day is “Universal Access and Human Rights”.
First conceptualized in August 1987 and inaugurated on December 1, 1988, World AIDS Day has been a yearly venue for remembering those who have died and those who are still alive, but are currently suffering under both the ravages of AIDS and the social and cultural stigma often attendant to it.
This year, the leaders of the world have pledged to work towards universal access to the prevention of HIV/AIDS infection and treatment and care for those who already have either the virus or the disease itself.
In 1991, the New York-based organization Visual AIDS brought together artists to create a symbol of support for the growing number of people living with HIV in the US. The result was the red ribbon, now the international symbol of AIDS awareness. It is also considered as a means of breaking down the stigma and prejudices that are caused by the lack of awareness / consciousness of the reality of AIDS.
Wear a red ribbon on Tuesday and show your support for the global fight against AIDS!
