Rainy Day Diagnosis for Laging Handa Trees

Part of Louis Mananquil’s job is to look after trees and see what they might need in terms of pruning and maintenance. A foreman of the Quezon City Parks and Highways agency, Mananquil recently looked after Barangay Laging Handa resident Ed Roces’s ailing tree.

Since May 2008, the barangay’s Environment Committee, headed by Dominic Oca, has been in contact with the agency to care for the area’s trees – and they have received a response just in time for the rainy season. However, due to their tight schedule, they had been previously unable to respond immediately to the barangay.

Old trees in the barangay need regular maintenance

Mananquil diagnosed Roces’s tree as being riddled with cavities. To save what can be saved of the old specimen, they opted to cut down the most affected branches.

The agency has pledged to return to the barangay in order to continue the maintenance and upkeep of the trees in the area; they are also to suggest methods by which they can be better cared for. If certain old trees need to be cut down because of their condition or possible danger to residents, the barangay has assured them that they will take action.

“We will try to resolve this concern to the best of our ability. However, we must admit that we are very tight in terms of budget. The only thing we can do at the moment is touch base with the Q. C. Parks and Highways and see to it that they diagnose the trees. If residents want any special cure or treatment for their trees, we encourage them to finance it themselves – until such time we can contribute in supporting them, but as I said, we will try our best and prioritize this,” Oca said.
