Intelligence community is actively hunting down the suspects, says Quezon City Police Department

Suspects have yet to be identified, much less caught, in the recent grenade-throwing incident in the parking lot of the Philippine Experimental Theater Association (PETA) theater, say Quezon City police.

Inspector Arturo Franco, chief of the QCPD Bomb Disposal Unit made this disclosure to ScoutAreaOnline.com after a community outcry for an immediate investigation into the PETA blast, which took place at dawn on August 3.

The intelligence community is actively getting leads for the immediate arrest of the perpetrators of this crime, Franco elaborated.

Initial reports conclude that Romer Barrientos, PETA security guard at the time of the blast, saw a man on board a motorcycle leaving the area after the explosion; Barrientos never had the time to write down the plate number due to heavy rains and zero visibility that night.

Franco said bomb fragments found in the vicinity showed that an Mk2 grenade went off during the blast. The Mk2 is an old-fashioned fragmentation grenade which was employed extensively during World War II by US soldiers. The blast created a five-inch wide crater at the parking lot and destroyed several glass panels of the office building.

He admitted that until now, they have no clues for the motives behind the explosion. However, steps are being taken to tighten the security perimeter around the area.

We just had a meeting with PETA President Cecille Garrucho and other officials to establish a security measure to prevent any similar incidents in the future, he divulged.

Soxy Topacio, director of the current run of Noli at Fili Dekada 2000 at the PETA theater

In an earlier interview, director Soxy Topacio, director of the play Noli at El Fili Dekada 2000 which had been showing on the day of the blast, said he saw no motives to cause such a violent act.

The play is a modern take on Jose Rizal’s famous novels Noli me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. The novels advocate writing as a form of rebellion, and as a nonviolent means of criticizing the government.

Soxy Topacio is a known director of both movie and stage plays. He is also a favorite actor to portray gay roles. He is fondly remebered as a gay character named Neneng in the 1980s hit sitcom 'Duplex'. He starred with the late director Ading Fernando, sexy bombshell Janice Jurado and Al Tantay.
