Funchal, Madeira We had flown to Amsterdam from LAX and boarded the boat Splendour of the Seas in Lisbon. We slowly made our way down the African coast to the island of Madeira, which is considered part of Portugal. The volcanic soil in Funchal is obviously a sign of the rich agriculture and wine making of Madeira. The scenic views are stunning, what with the glass like sheen of the Atlantic seen from the hills of Madeira. There are dwarf banana trees growing everywhere, clearly imported from northern Africa a few hundred miles across. The island is famous for its Madeira wine, sugarcane honey cakes (called bolo de mel), an ugly but tasty fish called espada, embroidery, wickerwork and a sledge ride down the paved streets. |

Las Vegas was pretty much the world capital of technology and gadget geekery from January 7-10 of this year, as it hosted the 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show (2010 International CES). While many of the gadgets featured at CES seemed to be riding on a 3D craze (inspired by James Cameron’s smash-hit Avatar?), everyone was talking about this one mobile phone that had come out just ahead of the show. We are, of course, talking about the Nexus One, the Android-powered smartphone from Google. Yes, Virginia, the Nexus One is out. Formally launched at a press event in California on January 5, Google made a point of making the phone available to as many users as is possible: you can get it via Google (http://www.google.com/phone/?locale=en_US&s7e=) at a price of USD529 (PHP24,330.01), unlocked and untethered to any mobile provider. This means that anyone can pick up a unit, stick their own SIM card in, and be able to use it right there and then. The phone is also available via T-Mobile in the US, priced at USD179 (PHP8262.72) and coming with a two-year contract. |

The login page for Facebook, which reportedly boasts 350 million users worldwide. Having spent most of 2009 implementing changes and tweaks to its site-wide privacy policies, the popular social media and networking site Facebook unveiled yet another series of changes on December 9. Foremost among these was the elimination of “networks”, which had previously allowed people who lived or worked in a certain area or went to school at a particular institution to share social information. The new privacy settings now allow the site’s users to control who sees posts, content, and media uploaded to personal profiles and pages. |
